Travel with Your Pet

Holiday time is the most-awaited moment for everyone. But, it can be worrisome not knowing what your pet is doing while you’re away. Some questions that probably pop into your mind are: is he okay, has he eaten yet, is he going to be sad without you and so on. You can have a trouble-free trip by taking your pet with you anywhere you go! Here are a few tips for taking your pet overseas.

  1. Plan ahead – Some countries require special tests months before you arrive. Some of the requirements needed beforehand are blood tests, vaccinations and microchips for identification. Countries and airlines have different requirements, ensure that you know what the specific ones are.
  1. What’s in a breed? – Many airlines will not allow a pug or other short-nosed breed. This is due to the increased difficulties they may have breathing on the plane. The breeds that you cannot bring with you are American Bulldog, Boston Terrier, Boxer, English or French Bulldog, King Charles Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Pug, Shar-Pei, Shih Tzu, Himalayan and Persian cats. One airline that was created for the transportation of pets is Pet Airways, however they ceased business.
  1. Check or Carry? – It’s very important to decide beforehand whether you will be carrying your pet as cargo or bring them on flight with you. Over 25lbs must be checked in the cargo area. Therefore, getting the correct sized carrier is a must. They should be able to lay down comfortably, turn around and stand up in the pet carrier.
  1. Call ahead – Call ahead to avoid any confusion. This will also enable you to find out their policy when carrying a pet. Some airlines require you to call beforehand to make a reservation for your pet. Asking about the temperature is also a good idea as you do not want your fluffy friend to be too hot or cold.
  1. Don’t go for sleeping pills – Many prefer to pass out and have some good sleep during the flight. However, this is not recommended for your pet. Doing so will make it difficult for your pet to breathe in the pressurised cabin. Instead, check with your vet prior to travelling.
  1. Food and drink – Before carrying any pet food or water during your trip, make sure you check with the airline if this is good. Each airline has different rules and it’s best to be prepared before you board.
  1. Label your carrier – A mishap can happen when you least expect it. Ensure that you label your carrier with lots of warnings and contact info in case you get separated from your pet.
