One man with a fair amount of basic medical knowledge can make a difference in the lives of many. Without qualified medical personnel available, it is you who must know what to do to stay alive."
~ US Army Survival Manual ~

The US Army Survival Manual dedicates twenty-seven pages to first aid and tips to deal with injury and illnesses.  You can download it for FREE here or you can order it in hardcopy or paperback.

Whether you are living in the city or the wilderness or just going on vacation, you should purchase several first aid kits.  One for your home and one for each vehicle.  These kits have the basic supplies, but I always suggest that you add a few goodies of your own, and keep them updated, because one never knows when the need will arise.  If you have your backpacks set up for a quick exit, be sure you have added the medical supplies that you will need, if just a minimal amount of each item.  Keep a medical training manual with these supplies.

Try to find the time to study up on alternative methods. Purchase or download information on herbs, wild crafting and a good vitamin and minerals manual.  Never take for granted that you will never need to know this information.  If for some reason you find yourself stranded in the wilderness, your knowledge on editable plants and medicinal plants for all regions could save your life and/or your families life.

Don't forget about dental supplies and instruments needed to pull a tooth or sooth a broken tooth.  Anything can happen.

A Few Practical Tips:

We can go for several days without food, but water is necessary to keep our bodies from dehydrating and our organs from shutting down.  It is a good idea to have some kind of portable water filter system.  Berkey sells light weight personal water bottles that you can put in your packs or strap on your belt, that will filter most any type of water that you put in them.  The temperature and your physical activity will determine how much water you will need to consume daily to avoid dehydration.  The average adult person loses and must replace 2 to 3 liters of water daily.  If you read the manual, it will give you the symptoms of dehydration.

Living in the desert, I have found that soaking several ties in water and placing one around the forehead and one around the neck helps cool one down when physically burning up energy and fluid.  Even soaking your feet in water can help one avoid a heat stroke.

Read through the US Army Survival Manual to find out what kind of supplies that you will need for different medical conditions that might occur if you are out in the wilderness or on the street.

Make sure that you add Hydrogen Peroxide, Alcohol ISP 3%, Neosporin, Oil of Oregano, liquid Iodine or Betadine and 750 psi of liquid Colloidal Silver to your bug out bag or medical bag.
